Sobre Pizzeria Paradiso
Definitely purgatorio, not paradiso. That said, this is a matter of pizza preference. If you prefer American-style pizzas (cardboard crust, lots of cheese, uninteresting sauce, toppings piled high), you'll be happy here. If, however, you prefer authentic Neapolitan or even Roman pizza (delicate crust, serious sauce, less-but-high-quality cheese), go elsewhere (for example, Orso in Falls Church). For me, the test of a pizza joint is the simplest pizzas, a Margherita or, better still, a basic marinara (no cheese, so you really "get" the sauce). Thus, I had a simple "Pizza Paradiso," with sauce made in house and cheese. Well, much too much blah cheese, not enough sauce,(did the kitchen run out?) and a crust that could have come from the supermarket. That one was just plain bad. Still, giving the place three stars because it clearly appeals to many, and the wines by the glass are well-chosen, if overpriced and small pours (twelve bucks for a glass of wine that costs ten bucks a bottle is over the top). And, to be fair, I'm prejudiced against any restaurant that has large-screen TVs all over--about as Italian as sauerkraut. As we left, my wife commented that the place was "Domino's for yuppies." Sums it up, although she was a bit tough on Domino's.
