Sobre Escadaria Selarón
One of the most colorful and photogenic places in Rio de Janeiro is Escadaria Selarón. Between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa, the huge staircase is entirely covered with colorful mosaics and tiles, by the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who lived opposite the place and took it upon himself to renovate the space. He started work on the staircase in the early 90s and, with persistence and passion, left an iconic legacy in 250 steps, 125m long and more than 2 thousand tiles, with pieces coming from more than 60 different countries, such as Australia, Slovenia, Austria. , Kazakhstan and Jordan, as well as pieces from construction sites, rubble and some hand-painted pieces by the artist. It is worth observing the tiles calmly, revealing their origins and appreciating their illustrations. The place has appeared in films and clips, such as by U2 and rapper Snoop Dogg. Its importance led to its listing as a cultural heritage of the city.
