Sobre Itaipu Power Plant
The Itaipu Dam broke the record for visits in 2016, when it also became the world leader in energy production. If you are a fan of 'great works of humanity', you will enjoy the guided tour of the Plant. It is interesting to see up close one of the greatest works of modern engineering and feel small in front of its immensity.
Itaipu is the largest hydroelectric plant in the world in terms of production, generating 71.3% of the energy consumed in Paraguay and 16.4% of what we use in Brazil. The dam, where 40,000 people worked at the height of the works, is 8 km long and 196 meters high, the equivalent of a 65-story building. And the flow of only two of its turbines is equivalent to the average flow of the Iguaçu Falls. It is also curious how the place works, which has been divided between Brazil and Paraguay since the agreement made in 1973 to change the course of the Paraná River and produce energy. There are several types of guided tours through the space and the choice depends on your level of curiosity and interest. More generally, you know the Plant - you'll see it up close - and also the Casimiro Montenegro Fiho Astronomical Hub, which brings together a planetarium, observatory and the Espaço Universo, like a small astronomy museum. You can also add to the visit the Ecomuseum, a space that tells the story of Itaipu Binacional through photos and old objects, a 76 square meter model that reproduces the entire region, among other resources.
