Sobre Bela Vista Biological Refuge
The oldest and most successful project at the Itaipu hydroelectric plant is the Bela Vista Biological Refuge, a protection unit created to receive thousands of plants and animals displaced by the plant's reservoir. The tour starts in a small trailer, which leaves the Visitors Reception Center and goes around the Piracema Channel to the Refúgio buildings. All spaces use alternative energy sources and were built based on green architecture concepts. The route continues with a 2 km walk on a trail through the native forest and involves lessons in environmental education. Enjoy more than 960 plant genera and 50 animal species such as ocelots, alligators, hawks, king vultures, coati, red macaws, tortoises, owls, snakes, capuchin monkeys and jaguars.
